Building Healthy, Sustainable Communities in Philadelphia
We help keep the south Philly community healthy through our weekly seasonal farmers market, which accepts W.I.C. checks and will soon accept access cards. We hire local teenagers for summer employment, and we have partnered with Power Corp and members of our community to build a rain garden and raise our high house (a greenhouse which allows us to extend the growing season and produce even more fresh food for the community).
Grow Philly believes that the best way for a community to become sustainable is for it to use resources that are already available, and produce from those resources.
We have partnered with Novick Brothers and United Communities to run community-based urban farms on previously unused open land in the city.
Under the guidance of Director of Urban Farming Adam Forbes, and largely as a result of his endless efforts and unbelievable determination, these lands have been
transformed into a sustainable soul;
providing nourishment for our community.
